Danger of Science Denial

The world has come very far in life with vaccinations and living longer. In the past the only ones who lived the longest were the wealthy while the common person could die of diphtheria or other diseases.

Even though we have come far we are still facing many problems such as hunger and eliminating our natural resources. Science is needed now to help turn around the planet.
The vaccination rate for MMR is going down because there was a link between that vaccination and Autism. After the study came back it showed that there were no links between the two, but because people like Jenny McCarthy spreading word on shows like Oprah people believe famous people over the actual study. People are now dying from a disease that there are vaccinations for.

This is really not surprising with the way people respond to society. With thinking about the way the world has embraced things such as Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and all the social networks… it is not surprising that people would listen to stars and not scientists.

His view on vitamins….that all they do is give you dark urine. I will defiantly need to research this because I am an avid vitamin taker. He thinks they are crap! Echinacea…anytime I am getting sick I take this!!!

Normal food verses organic food… Everything has been grown by man so why are people spending extra money on organic food? This is his argument.

Overall, Michael Specter is talking about how we need to get in the time machine and move ahead into the world. We need to embrace science more into this otherwise our planet is in for serious danger. These dangers being dangers we have had a long time ago such as hunger and diseases. There is no reason for that now! We have the resources we just have to act now!

  1. Thoughtful... what can you do as a teacher to help kids distinguish between real science and bogus rumor or patently false information found on the internet? Teachers are the first line of defense in the battle to keep us all being run over by politically motivated or financially motivated rumor mongers.
