Danger of Science Denial
The world has come very far in life with vaccinations and living longer. In the past the only ones who lived the longest were the wealthy while the common person could die of diphtheria or other diseases.
Even though we have come far we are still facing many problems such as hunger and eliminating our natural resources. Science is needed now to help turn around the planet.
The vaccination rate for MMR is going down because there was a link between that vaccination and Autism. After the study came back it showed that there were no links between the two, but because people like Jenny McCarthy spreading word on shows like Oprah people believe famous people over the actual study. People are now dying from a disease that there are vaccinations for.
This is really not surprising with the way people respond to society. With thinking about the way the world has embraced things such as Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, and all the social networks… it is not surprising that people would listen to stars and not scientists.
His view on vitamins….that all they do is give you dark urine. I will defiantly need to research this because I am an avid vitamin taker. He thinks they are crap! Echinacea…anytime I am getting sick I take this!!!
Normal food verses organic food… Everything has been grown by man so why are people spending extra money on organic food? This is his argument.
Overall, Michael Specter is talking about how we need to get in the time machine and move ahead into the world. We need to embrace science more into this otherwise our planet is in for serious danger. These dangers being dangers we have had a long time ago such as hunger and diseases. There is no reason for that now! We have the resources we just have to act now!

ABCya!
This site was soooooo fun! :) Why is this site not available for 4th grade!
The first one I clicked on was computer vocabulary. I imagine with society growing the way it is, students would do well with this one. The old school tv made me laugh. What I enjoyed the most about this one is that on the search list was an ipod! I thought wireless router was a challenging one for a kindergarten student but I am sure some of them have to help their parents! I still didn't find that silly ipod...
Some games were more just for fun... the pumpkin carving for example. Had a blast tho!
Make a robot was good because the kids were able to use their imaginations and it tied into the environment by including a recycle box.

BNN
I was watching an episode on school tube on BNN. I selected the one that was for April 19, 2010. These students look to be around the age of my students if not a little older. I was amazed with their professionalism at how they sat and presented themselves. This seemed to be a way for their school to do their announcements. I think the students having to do this has given them an opportunity to practice how to act and communicate in a professional manner. While the main person spoke the other three kept eye contact. Kudos to them!
Can they come teach my students how to present that way! I am going to show this to my kids after this dreadful week of testing!

Green
I found this website interesting since we just finished doing a persuasive paragraph in my classroom on why we need to reduce, reuse, and recycle. My students seemed to be very eager to want to help but they found throughout the day many things they were doing that were wasting in some way. We talked about leaving water running, leaving lights on, wasting toilet paper and paper towels. I am excited to go through these lessons to see what we could use after testing.
One great thing about this website is the connection in the curriculum. The Lorax is a great way for the students to understand this problem. We have read this to our entire building. Life cycle is a large standard in third grade and connecting life cycles to this concept of choosing how to dispose of materials is a great way to train the students now how important it is to reduce, reuse, and recycle. I have found that their attitude toward this carries on at home as parents have talked about their child convincing them to make better choices! Way to go kiddos!

Educational Administrator
The video “A MUST-SEE for Every Educational Administrator in the World” is what I have heard many discussions about with society changing and education not changing! In the past people went to school and universities to learn but it depended on wealth. This is still happening with people who can afford to go to universities…they can learn… BUT WAIT! The revolution is now!! THE INTERNET. Anyone can learn using the internet or technology in general. LEARNING IS FREE!
Changing Math
After watching Arthur Benjamin’s formula for changing math education I feel that he has made a very valid point. He talks about the pyramid to building mathematics up to statistics and NOT Calculus. This makes the most sense to me as Arthur talks about how statistics and probability are used in real life situations. I have to say we do a lot of this is fourth grade and it ties across the curriculum. He talks about how it can be fun and can include games. This is great to get our students engaged!
